When a baby is born, the placenta is an invaluable part of postpartum healing process for both mother and child. For thousands of years, the Chinese have revered this powerful substance in their Materia Medica as regenerative to the essence and the breath. Full of Qi (life force), the placenta aids in the recovery from childbirth, restoring lost hormones, augmenting lactation, shortening bleeding time, preventing mood jags, and ultimately helping the child in this vital time of bonding and nurturance.

Right after the baby is born, the placenta is picked up, and then soaked and washed thoroughly, removing any blot clots. It is believed that the state of mind one carries while working with the placenta will be absorbed into the medicine, so the healing focus is maintained throughout the process. Singing, massaging it, and giving it good blessings is a great way to induce love and connection into the process. The umbilical cord is cut and washed separately, and the blood clots massage out. After the placenta is thoroughly cleansed, then it is placed in a food processor or blender and mixed until smooth. Following this process, it is put it into the dehydrator for 24 hours, followed by grinding it into powder and putting it into a jar with the baby’s name labeled on it. The umbilical cord would be dehydrated separately in the shape of the first letter of the baby’s name. A superfood fruit and placenta can be made into a smoothie that both mother and father can drink together. The rest can be kept in a freezer, and every day, 1 teaspoon can be added to a smoothie of your choosing until you either run out or feel complete for awhile.

This whole process is $150, which includes a labeled jar of washed and dehydrated placenta powder, the dried umbilical cord, a fruit smoothie with placenta powder, and the option of a placenta print t-shirt or cloth.
